How Age Is Calculated

Age is typically calculated by counting the full number of years, months, and days that have elapsed since a person's date of birth up to the current date. The most accurate method compares the birth date component-by-component: first years, then months, then days.

When today's day is less than the birth day, we "borrow" a month and add the number of days in the previous month to the current day before subtracting. Similarly, when today's month is less than the birth month, we borrow a year and add 12 months. This borrowing logic ensures accurate results regardless of the time of year.

Leap years — those divisible by 4, with exceptions for century years — are automatically handled. February 29 birthdays are treated as February 28 on non-leap years for the purposes of birthday occurrence and countdown calculations.

Using UTC dates instead of local dates removes the risk of a date shifting across midnight due to your system's timezone offset, which could cause the calculator to report your age off by one day in edge cases. This is why our tool uses UTC date parsing throughout.
